How to Achieve High Accuracy Measurement with Magnetic Sensing Technology?

Methods to improve the accuracy measurement of magnetic field sensors

Due to their higher reliability and precision in detecting part position and velocity, magnetic field sensors have significant advantages in robotics and factory automation. Therefore, they are crucial for motion control. This advantage allows robotic arms and other components to move smoothly and accurately, ensuring high-quality and high-safety manufacturing processes.

Magnetic sensors are devices that convert changes in magnetic properties caused by external factors such as magnetic field, current, stress strain, temperature, and light into electrical signals to detect corresponding physical quantities.

Magnetic sensors, commonly referred to as magnetic switches, are mainly composed of magnetic sensing elements and electronic circuits. By detecting the magnetic ring position in the cylinder movement through the characteristics of magnetic induction, they achieve the purpose of detecting the motion position of the piston rod. In automatic control systems, magnetic field sensor applications can be in limit, counting, positioning control, and automatic protection functions.

Types of magnetic switch sensors

According to the design principles of magnetic switches, they can be divided into two major types: those with contacts (reed switch type) and those without contacts (electronic type).

Magnetic switches with contacts

When a magnetic field is sensed, the two reed blades inside the reed switch will magnetize and attract each other, mechanically making contact and closing the circuit to send a signal. When the magnetic field weakens and falls below the holding strength, the two reed blades will spring open, disconnecting the switch. The advantage of this type of magnetic reed switch sensor is that it can be used with a wide range of voltages, applicable to AC/DC power with voltage resistance up to 240 volts. The disadvantage is that the reed switch, made of fragile glass material, is delicate and susceptible to sensitivity variation or malfunction due to slight collisions.

Magnetic switches without contacts

The magnetic reed switch for pneumatic cylinder detect the position of the magnetic ring in the cylinder through the characteristics of a dedicated magnetoresistive IC and output driving and switch signals. Compared to reed switches, electronic magnetic switch sensors have advantages such as higher precision in sensing position, anti-vibration, anti-impact, high protection level, and long service life. They also have a wider range of magnetic field intensity induction. The disadvantage is that they have lower voltage resistance, with most non-contact switches only being applicable to DC voltage up to 30 volts.
